She was born on Jan. 18, 1962 in Red Wing, the daughter of Gordon A. Johnson and Myrna (Leonard) Hanson.
She grew up near Rush City and graduated from Rush City High School in 1980. She then attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where she met her future husband, Ki Hernandez, of St. Paul.
They were married on Nov. 26, 1982 in St. Paul and made their first home in Denver, CO. A few years later, they returned to St. Paul. In 1986, they bought a home in Savage, where they have lived ever since.
Michelle was a longtime employee of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and worked as a recruiting specialist out of their Minneapolis office.
Her hobbies included quilting, cross stitch and reading. Time spent with her family and friends was most precious to her. Michelle was a member of the Glendale United Methodist Church since 1991. She was also a very involved member of the Cursillo community.
She was diagnosed with leukemia in January 1999. The disease had been in remission for two and one half years.
In addition to her husband, Ki, Michelle is survived by her daughter, Karen, her parents, Myrna Hanson, Rush City; and Gordon and Lois Johnson, Ellsworth, WI; sisters and brother-in-law, Ann Johnson, Nelson, WI; Amy and Eric Frye, Burnsville; Annette and Corey Sias, Rush City; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Kim Johnson, Ellsworth; nieces and nephews, Cecilia and Samuel Sias, Megan, Brandon and Zachary Frye, and Adam Johnson, many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at the Glendale United Methodist Church in Savage. The Rev. Lynda Ellis officiated.
Music was provided by the Praise Team.
Casketbearers were Corey Sias, Eric Frye, Michael Johnson, Little Joe Hernandez, Jeff Claseman and Jim Clasemen.
Burial was at First Lutheran Cemetery in Rush City.
Memorials are preferred to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 5217 Wayzata Blvd, St. Louis Park, MN 55416 or the Wells-Fargo Scholarship Fund for Karen Hernandez.
