"Nellie" was the oldest child of Edmund Virgil Conway, Sr. and Cora Barret. Nellie's father, an attorney, was a member of the Missouri Constitutional Convention of 1875. He was the son of Samuel Conway and Mourning Baxter.

"Miss Nellie" was a well-known piano teacher in the Bridgeton area in northwest St. Louis County, Missouri. She never married and lived in Chicago, Illinois for a time. After her brother-in-law, James Edward Avery, died in 1946, she moved in with her widowed sister, Virgie Conway Avery.

Nellie was hospitalized for the final 11 days of her life. She died at Jewish Hospital of pneumonia. At the time of her death, she was 90 years, 2 months and 18 days old.

She was survived by 1 sister, Virgie Avery.

Visitation was held at Baumann Brothers Funeral Home on Woodson Road in Overland, Missouri. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 17 Oct 1961 at Mizpah Presbyterian Church on St. Charles Rock Road at Fee Fee Road. Nellie's uncle, Dr. Thomas Carr Barret, was the minister there for many years in the 1880's.

Nellie's stone matches those for her sister, Virgilia, and brother-in-law, James. Nellie is buried next to Virgie's family.
