"JOHN WINAND, Jr [...] only [surviving] son of John Winand, Sr. His mother's maiden name was Mary M. Howard; he was born in Hopewell Tp., York Co., Penn., April 5, 1821 [...] On the sixth of April 1843, he married Miss Cynthia Painter of Perry Tp., Richland Co., O., where she was born July 2, 1824 [...]" John, Jr., "tilled his father's farm of eighty acres from 1843 to 1850, when he purchased it, and being the only living son, he became the support of his aged parents which he performed generously and well, until their demise some twenty years from that time. In those days Mr. Winand and his faithful wife worked early and late until the fair fields smile, and the little cabin gave place to a substantial frame dwelling in 1861, where they lived until 1873. In that year he moved on his present place [...] his present estate covers an area of two hundred and eighty acres, comprising rich farming lands, rolling meadows and beautiful sugar groves. Of late years sheep-raising has been the special employment of Mr. Winand [...] He has six children living—Sarah J., now Mrs. E. C. Penn [...] William H., born July 24, 1849, married Matilda Ruby, lives in Waterford; Silas F. born May 29, 1859, married Candis Fawlin, lives in this township; Mary J., born March, 18, 1856, married Thomas Williams of this township; John C., born Jan. 7, 1859, at home; Chancy A., born Nov. 2, 1867, at home; four sons died when young—George B., [and] infant; Charles, and Leroy M." "John Winand, a well known and respected farmer, died Feb. 6 and was buried Feb. 8. His death was caused by the grip [influenza]. He was ill five days. He leaves two daughters and four sons. His wife preceded him to the grave three years ago." ("Waterford," The Mansfield News, Mansfield, Ohio, 17 Feb 1899, p. 6, col. 3.) Waterford is in Middlebury Township, Knox County, Ohio. The township borders Perry Township, Morrow County. Waterford was also called Levering. Other newspaper articles report, and his headstone inscription shows, that he died on 7 Feb.

"John Winand, aged seventy-seven years, died recently at Levering, this county. He was a pioneer of that locality." (No title, The Marion Daily Star, Marion, Ohio, 16 Feb 1899, p. 4.)

On an 1857 map of Morrow Co., Ohio, John Winand is shown to possess 120 acres in Perry Twp., Section 33 (80 acres in the western half of the northeast quarter, and an adjoining slice of 40 acres in the northwest quarter. The eastern half the northeast quarter, 80 acres, was owned by J. "Rinehart." Jacob "Reinhart" entered this land, obtaining the patent in 1824. In the 1840 U.S. Census for Richland County, the townships are not identified, but, on p. 226 (printed), Jacob "Rineheart" is on the 13th line, and John Wynand (senior) is on the 27th line.
