"John Winand, a well known and respected farmer, died Feb. 6 and was buried Feb. 8. His death was caused by the grip [influenza]. He was ill five days. He leaves two daughters and four sons. His wife preceded him to the grave three years ago." ("Waterford," The Mansfield News, Mansfield, Ohio, 17 Feb 1899, p. 6, col. 3.) Waterford is in Middlebury Township, Knox County, Ohio. The township borders Perry Township, Morrow County. Waterford was also called Levering. Other newspaper articles report, and his headstone inscription shows, that he died on 7 Feb.
"John Winand, aged seventy-seven years, died recently at Levering, this county. He was a pioneer of that locality." (No title, The Marion Daily Star, Marion, Ohio, 16 Feb 1899, p. 4.)
Notes
On an 1857 map of Morrow Co., Ohio, John Winand is shown to possess 120 acres in Perry Twp., Section 33 (80 acres in the western half of the northeast quarter, and an adjoining slice of 40 acres in the northwest quarter. The eastern half the northeast quarter, 80 acres, was owned by J. "Rinehart." Jacob "Reinhart" entered this land, obtaining the patent in 1824. In the 1840 U.S. Census for Richland County, the townships are not identified, but, on p. 226 (printed), Jacob "Rineheart" is on the 13th line, and John Wynand (senior) is on the 27th line.
