Miriam Painter, eldest child of John Painter and his second wife Rachel (née Redd), was born about 1809 in Frederick County, Virginia, probably on the Painter family plantation which may have been in the vicinity of Nineveh (now in Warren County). She was named after mother's sister and mother's paternal grandmother.

About 1812-13, the Painter family moved to Belmont County, Ohio, and in 1814 John Painter entered land in Richland County, Ohio. There, about 1831, Miriam Painter married Levi Ruhl. (The couple's eldest child Elizabeth was born in 1832 or 1833.) Miriam and her family later moved to Holt County, Missouri, probably after Elizabeth's 1852 marriage in Richland County.

Miriam Ruhl died in 1856. She was survived by her husband and their six children. Levi Ruhl, with married daughters Elizabeth Thuma, and Mary Olive Brockman, moved to Kansas, and later to Washington Territory, where daughter Caroline Lorraine Brockman, also settled. Daughter Rachel Huntsman died in 1861 in Holt County. Son John Painter Ruhl remained in Holt County, and son George Ruhl did, too, until moving in 1904 to Oklahoma.

Notes:

Miriam is the Biblical spelling of her name. "Mariam" appears in the 1850 census (her only extant record from her lifetime); "Marium" is the spelling on her headstone; and "Miriam" is spelling on her father's final estate settlement.

Miriam Ruhl's 1 August 1812 date of birth, calculated from her headstone inscription, appears to be incorrect. She was born probably in 1809: after her parents' recorded 2 June 1808 marriage, and before her next-younger sibling's reliably reported 24 November 1810 birth.

An 1809 year of birth is cited also in Harold Painter, The Painter Family (1975), p. 25. Inserted into the account of the children of John Painter and second wife Rachel Redd on page 35, Harold Painter states: "My great-uncle, Sherman M. Painter, furnished most of this information some 40 years ago." Sherman Marquis Painter (1857-1938), a son of Hamilton Painter (1810-1897), was born, and worked for most of his life, on the Painter family farm in Richland County. The extent of "this information" is not specific.

Miriam is likely the girl aged 5 years and under included in the enumeration of John Painter's household in the 1810 U.S. Census, Frederick Co., Virginia.

Her place of birth is more certain: Virginia, as shown in the 1850 census, Her elder son George in the 1880 census reported Ohio as her place of birth, but in the 1900 through 1920 censuses he reported Virginia. Her younger son John reported Virginia as mother's place of birth in the 1880 through 1920 censuses.

The Painter family farm in the southeast corner of Perry Township bordered Jefferson Township to the east, and Knox County's Middlebury Township to the south. John Painter entered his land in 1814. John and Rachel Painter were enumerated in Perry Township from 1820 to 1860.

Richland County, Ohio, marriage records, volume 2 (about 1825 to 1834), is no longer extant.

Comment: Although the ages of Miriam Ruhl and her children are off by a few years, the birth order appears to be correct.

John Painter died intestate (without a will); Hamilton Painter was one of the estate administrators. Half of the net proceeds from the estate went to the widow; half went to the heirs at law, generally the children (or descendants) of a person who died without a will. The 14 parties listed as heirs at law included: "5. The Children of Miriam Rule decd [deceased]."
