Born to a wealthy Austin, Texas family. She eloped at seventeen years old with William Sydney Porter (the famous author, O. Henry). In 1888 they had a son who died after a few hours and in 1889 they had their only child, a daughter, Margaret Worth Porter (died 1927). The couple were active in the arts and theatre groups in Austin with Athol encouraging her husband to pursue his writing career. In 1891 her husband was working as a teller at First National Bank of Austin. He was accused of embezzlement and they left Austin for Houston after he was fired. He was later indicted, they left for New Orleans and later to Honduras. Athol and her daughter returned to Austin to live with her parents. While there, her tuberculosis worsened and she died of consumption in 1897.
