JAY – Helen Torrance Coughlin, 85, of Jay, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 1995, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

Born in in Upper Jay May 15, 1910, she was the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth (Madden) Torrance.

She graduated from Au Sable Forks High School in 1927, and from Plattsburgh Normal School in 1930. She also attended Plattsburgh State University and the University of Vermont in Burlington. She was a seventh and eighth grade English teacher at Au Sable Forks Central School for 37 years, retiring in 1967.
Mrs. Coughlin was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the Plattsburgh State Alumni Association. She also belonged to the local senior citizens F.A.N. club and was a communicant of Holy Name Church in Au Sable Forks.

Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Kathleen Torrance and David and Lena Torrance, all of Au Sable Forks; two step-sons, Douglas Coughlin of Hudson Falls and Thomas Coughlin of South Carolina; three step-daughters, Mrs. Donald (Nancy) Carte of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Eugene (Betty) Braunstein of South Carolina and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Plumadore of Clayburg; 17 step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, David Coughlin, whom she married Aug. 2. 1947, died June 8, 1984.

Calling hours will be held Nov. 7, 1995 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in Au Sable Forks. Funeral services will be held Nov. 8, 1995 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name Church. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Name Church, the Au Sable Forks Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Au Sable Forks Library, or to the charity of one's choice.
