Commemorative Biography of Central Pennsylvania
Gen. Daniel K Heckman one of the most distinguished & honored citizens of Sugar Valley, Clinton County was born on the old homestead in Greene twp. of a well-known family of German origin.
Peter Heckman his grandfather was a native of Berks County where he spent his boyhood in the occupation of farming but after his marriage, he & his wife moved to Penn's Valley Centre County, where he purchased 240 acres near Spring Mills which he continued to cultivate & improve until he was called to the world beyond. His remains were buried in that county. He was a Jacksonian Democrat. In his family were 8 children: Peter, John, George, Frederick, Jacob, Michael Mrs. Kissel & 1 daughter who married in the West.
John Heckman, our subject's father was born & reared in Penn's Valley Centre County & acquired a fair German education & also was able to speak English. After becoming a man, he came to what is now Sugar Valley & here purchased 200 acres part of John Kleckner's farm. He cleared & improved the land & made it his home for over 50 years. Like his father he was a staunch Democrat & a member of the Lutheran Church. In his early manhood he married Elizabeth Kleckner a native of Mifflinburg, the daughter of John Kleckner a prominent farmer of Centre County & later Clinton County. Nine children blessed this union: Sarah who married John Wilt, John, George, Elizabeth who married John Ruhl, Catherine married John Wolford of Orangeville Ill, Mary A married Jefferson Hartman of Michigan, Peter, Daniel K of this sketch & Rebecca who married John B Schrack of Greene twp.
General Heckman married his wife Miss Elizabeth Kline in 1849 in Gregg township Centre County. She was the daughter of Daniel Kline a farmer. She died in 1870. She left a family of 4 children: Dennis an invalid died in 1873, John K who married Della Cole, Regina the wife of R W A Jameson & Minerva the wife of Howard Smith. In 1874 he married again to Hannah Slear.
He was made Brigadier General by Governor Curtin but his service had expired before the Civil War. He had a strong desire to enlist again in the service of his country but friends prevailed upon him to remain at home with his family.
Daniel raised thorough bred horses. He was president & a stockholder in the Sugar Valley Fire Company. He was a Democrat in politics, a member of the Lutheran Church & a member of the I.O.O.F. in Lock Haven. He served 15 years commencing as a private in the Ringgold Artillery which was organized in Loganton in 1846. No better or more patriotic citizen can be found in central Pennsylvania.
