Alexander Merchant was a prolific architect in New Brunswick and the surrounding areas. Scottish by birth, he studied under
the legendary architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. In a career that spanned seven decades, he designed many of the area's most attractive school buildings, churches, and homes, including such New Brunswick landmarks as the Elks Lodge (still standing at 40 Livingston Avenue), Roosevelt and Redshaw Schools, and the World War I Memorial Monument (located where French Street and Jersey Avenue merge).
