Mrs. Carswell was born in Atlanta and attended Business College after high school. From there she took a part-time job at a Greyhound bus lines office in Atlanta. Her aunt and uncle's neighbor worked there and she worked for him.
But she wanted something full-time, so the business college found her the job at J.I. Case Company where she was secretary to the credit manager for the southeast. She began work there in about 1941. This is where she met her future husband, who was at that time manager of the parts department. It took her a while to "catch him" as he was "bashful," plus he was expecting to be drafted. But they were married in 1942. She continued work there till Bob was born. She continued to work there occasionally as needed to fill in for someone.
After Judy was born she went to work at Rich's downtown on the sixth floor in the complaints department. This job did not pay much, so she eventually looked for something else and went to work for White Motor Company, working for the manager for the SE. She worked there until Becky was born.
Mrs. Carswell heard about a new church that was being started close to her, and the first meeting she attended she was asked to be the clerk. She did not know what this entailed but agreed to do it and soon ended up as church secretary. She worked there for 15 years (1953 to 1968).
She worked for Sanders Paints for 10 years before retiring in 1984. She worked for Mr. and Mrs. Sanders, the owners of the company, who were Austrian, and for Mr. Kimline, who was the manager. She ended her time there working in the personnel department.
She was church secretary at Manley Memorial Baptist Church from 1988 to 2010. Her retirement/birthday celebration was held at the church Oct. 10, 2010.
Survivors include a son, Robert G. Carswell (Judy) of Conyers; daughters, Judith Reese (Terry) of Elkhart, Ind., and Becky Meyer (Mike) of Eatonton; grandchildren, Mary Byrd (Anthony), Nancy Pietroisewicz (Joey), Rebekah Reese and Keith Carswell (Jeni); three great-grandchildren, Briannah and Michael Byrd and Elise Carswell.
