Lawrence W. "Peewee" Sager, 90, long time resident of Herington, died Saturday, December 18th, 2010, at the Herington Municipal Hospital. He was born on April 29, 1920, at Solomon, KS, the son of Joseph J. Sr. and Ethel A. (Iverson) Sager.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010, at the First Christian Church, Herington, with Rev. Shawn Baird officiating; burial will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, with military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 7pm until 8pm at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel; and Wednesday from 10pm until 11pm at the church.
Mr. Sager was known by his family and friends in Herington as "Peewee", and at his work in Fort Riley as "Shorty" where he worked for many years at the airbase as an airframe foreman. During World War II he was a Staff Sergeant working on aircraft's hydraulic systems, and saw action in Northern France and the Rhineland Theaters. He was proud to be called a "Tin Bender".
He married Patricia L. Daetwiler on May 16, 1948, in Herington; she survives. He is also survived by his daughter Pam Gentz (husband-Lonny) of Topeka; a son Brad Sager of Mission, KS; a brother Joe "Bud" Sager, Jr. of Wichita; four (4) sisters: Lorene Harrison of Derby, Helen Fulton of Salina, Mary Ellen "Peg" Dix of Hutchinson and Donna Schmedeman of Wichita; and two (2) grandchildren (Amy Aldridge & Jay Gentz).
He is preceded in death by a brother (Charles Sager), four (4) sisters (Beulah Bouligny, Marie Oborny, Joan Stiles, & Geneva Woosley), his parents, and his step-mother Anna Mae (Vogt) Sager.
