William J. Begley, a retired building contractor and chairman of the Ventura Housing Authority, died in a local hospital Saturday after a brief illness, he was 59. Mr. Begley, a resident of Ventura since 1966, lived at 1215 Anchors Way Dr. and was active in several organizations at the Ventura Marina Mobile Home Owners League.
Mr. Begley was born in Evansville, Indiana, Feb. 10, 1914, and was a city fireman and building contractor in Indianapolis, IN, for 25 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine and the Scottish Rite and was also manager of the mobile home park's "kitchen band".
Mr. Begley was appointed to the Ventrua Housing Authority Board a year ago to succeed Joe Mendoza, who resigned. Last Dec. 15, he was elected chairman, succeeding Mrs. Florence Gregory. He was active in the American Red Cross, the Methodist Church and Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Begley is survived by his wife, Mary E. Begley; sons, Richard of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Robert of Pendleton, IN; daughter, Barbara A. Furst of Drexel Hill, PA; and 16 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Ventura Marina Mobile Home Park Monday a 2 p.m. The Rev. P. Wayne Johnson of the Palm Desert Community Church will officiate. Cremation will follow. Donations may be made to the Heart Assocation in his memory.
