A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2005 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Marty, MN for Donald Clarence Merten, age 68, who died Thursday at the Saint Cloud Hospital.

(Note added by Don Krueger) He was in the Saint Cloud Hospital for a heart repair operation, after four (4) hours into the operating procedures, he passed on.

Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. Monday morning at the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.

Don was born in Marty (Pearl Lake), Maine Prairie Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to John and Elizabeth (Post) Merten. He married Dorothy Stueve on August 12, 1958 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph,Stearns County, Minnesota.Don entered the U.S. Navy in 1954. Don served on the USS Randolph from 1955-58, receiving an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1962 after serving 4 years active duty and 4 years in inactive reserves.(Note added by Don Krueger). After initial miltary basic training he was assigned to the USS RANDOLPH (CVA-15), a Air Craft Carrier, home ported in Norfolk, Va with Eleven months deployments to the Mediterrinean Sea in Europe) He graduated from St. John's University in 1977, and was employed by the St. Cloud V.A. for over forty years as an Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Counselor. Don was a member of the Rockville Sports-men's Club, Knight's of Columbus, Rockville City Planning Board, VFW Post #4847, and Cancer Relay for Life. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish of Pearl Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children Rick (Gail) of Coon Rapids, Mark (Marlene) of Big Lake, Pam Merten (Michael Borgert) of Reston, VA, and Greta (Todd) Christen of Eden Prairie; grandchildren Ericka and Jake Merten, Christopher (Leah), David and Bobbi Merten, and Tiana and Jenna Christen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Merten and Elizabeth (Post) Killeen; and stepfather Edward Killeen.
