John Massey Gatling was the son of Cynthia Benigna Massey b: 25 AUG 1853, married George E. Gatling on Nov. 25, 1886 in San Augustine, TX. George was a lawyer in San Augustine, TX. The Gatling House,one mile south of San Augustine, TX was built for George and his wife Cynthia B.Massey in 1890. The house was of the Classic greek revival style with native longleaf pine lumber and fireplaces were of handbrick brick. The house has been continuously occupied by 5 generations of the family. The house is a recorded Texas historic landmark, 1967. George E. Gatling was a first cousin of the inventor of the Gatling gun.

Cynthia parents were Margaret Benigna POLK married Dr. William Smith Massey on Dec 31, 1837 in TN and her parents were John Polk(b.1785) and Elizabeth Ann Polk, which both are buried in the Linn Flat Cemetery outside of Nacogdoches, TX. The Polk's family seemed related to almost everyone who was anyone in deep east Texas politics, as well as to national figures like President James K. Polk.

Marguerite Lane Gatling and John M. Gatling had two daughters; Jean Gatling who was married to Fred Phillips; and Molly Ann Gatling who was married to Jesse Franklin Cummins Jr. Also two sons,Edward Felton Gatling (b.29 May 1925, d. 1925) and John Lane Gatling (b. July 7, 1926).

John M. Massey died in Hidalgo county, McAllen, TX., but was buried in Robertson county, TX.
