Mathias and Malena left the Island of Stord, Norway on April 14, 1870 departing from Sunnhordland. They landed in Quebec, then traveled to Iowa. They reached Calamus, Iowa on June 14, 1870. Malena's sister Mari and her husband Nels Hendrickson were already in Calamus. The two families traveled by oxen for three weeks, arriving in Ann Township, Minnesota in 1872, where they filed for homesteads.
