The birth and death dates for Joshua Shields come from the Joshua and Louisa family bible record. I received a copy of this bible record from a distant Shields cousin, who had received a copy of the bible record from Charles and Peggy Shields (both now deceased), who at the time had the bible in their possession.

Joshua stood at 5'5" and had brown hair and blue eyes. He and Louisa were married on October 22, 1844, in Polk County, Tennessee. (This information was obtained by ordering a copy of Louisa's Widow's Service Pension from the National Archives) Unfortunately, all marriage records were destroyed by a court house fire in 1893.

Joshua was enumerated on the 1850 Census in White Township, Pike County, AR. On the 1860 Census, he was enumerated in the Honey Creek Township, McDonald County, MO. Joshua's Homestead Certificate shows he was granted land in Montgomery County, AR in June of 1889.

The children of Joshua and Louisa (White) Shields are:

Margaret Shields
William Shields
Mary Ann Shields
Hannah E. Shields
A.J. Shields
Rebecca Jane Shields
John Anderson Shields
Richard P. Shields
James A. Shields
Martha E. Shields
Thomas J. Shields
Malinda Ozella Shields
Benjamin F. Shields

From the Montgomery County, Arkansas "Our Heritage" book:

"Joshuay Shields, and his wife Louisa, brought their family to the mountains of Montgomery County from Neosho, Missouri, about 1862 to get away from the Civil War. They came in a wagon and settled at Fancy Hill, where they farmed for a living.

According to records and letters in an old Bible belonging to Joshuay Shields, they had thirteen children. Joshuay was born in 1817 and died in 1900. One of his thirteen children, John, born in 1860, was the grandfather of the Shields' in the area today. John Shields' sons were Dave, John Wesley, Charlie, Ben, Millard, Arthur, Curt, and Alvie.

Dave Shields owned the first radio in Hopper and the first automobile. On Saturday night he would unhook the battery from his truck, hook up the radio and the whole community would gather at Daves to listen to the radio. Dave Shields' son, Parks, was the first person in Hopper to own an airplane..."
