Tree Pfeifer Brown Hayes died of breast cancer December 20, 2010, at her home in Salt Lake City, cared for by family and friends. Tree (Terri Jean) was born May 12, 1962, to Richard and Patricia Brown in Hays, Kansas. She married James A. Hayes on Sept. 9, 1984. Educated in business, marketing and art, Tree home-schooled her children and worked to raise awareness about important issues in local politics, education and care of the environment. Tree was a writer on topics ranging from food to her beautiful beadwork. She helped found an acclaimed nutrition program at the Open Classroom and had a talent for creating delicious meals for special dietary needs. Tree was active in her church and shared her humor and passion with everyone she met. Tree had a brilliant mind, lightning-fast wit and multi-directional creativity. She will be sorely missed by her family and a large fan club. Tree is survived by husband Jim, daughters Sahara and Marina, father and second mother Dr. Richard and Bonnie Brown, brother Brandon (Na Young), sister Amy (Rob) and eight nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Dec. 27, 2011 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Drive, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Tree's memory to Imperial Park Project, c/o Jim Hayes, or ImperialParkProject.org on Facebook.
