Dr. Charles Frederick Deppe

Dr. Charles Frederick Deppe, 87, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at his residence in Franklin.

He was born May 24, 1912, in a small yellow house that is now Franklin College's Admissions Office. His parents were Charles Alexander and Pearl Dillard Fay Deppe.

He married Martha Ann (Drybread) Deppe on Nov. 23, 1939. She preceded him in death Jan. 22, 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Charles F. Deppe Jr. of Muncie, Brian J. Deppe of Franklin and Dr. James Timothy Deppe of Champaign, Ill.; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hefner of Valparaiso; a niece, Jean Holmgren Volz of Fort Wayne; a great-nephew, Kirby Volz; a cousin; Meredith VanDerVest; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Edwin F. Deppe; and a sister, Florence Deppe Holmgren.

He was a graduate of Franklin High School, a 1934 graduate of Franklin College and a 1941 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine.

He opened his medical practice in Edinburgh in 1947 and then in Franklin in 1949, where he remained for 38 years until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association, Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, Edinburgh Lodge 100, Edinburgh American Legion, First Baptist Church Choir, Johnson County Voices and American Medical Association 50-Year Club.

He was instrumental in establishing the Charles A. Deppe Endowed Chair in Biology in 1981 to honor his father. He was chairman of the college's Alumni Council and Board of Trustees.

He has received the following awards: Franklin College President's Circle Award, Distinguished Hoosier Award, Lifetime of Dedication and Leadership Award, Johnson Memorial Hospital, Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, doctor of Science, Franklin College, Franklin College Alumni Citation in 1989 and several awards with the military, including American Theater Ribbon, Purple Heart, Victory Ribbon and Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with nine Stars.

From 1943 to 1947, he served as a member of the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. He served two years abroad on the U.S.S. Monterey, sharing a room with future U.S. President Gerald Ford and surviving the sinking of a minesweeper. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his services.

The Rev. Richard Martin will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin.

Private burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson County Health Foundation, Cancer Treatment Center or Franklin College, Deppe Chair in Biology.
