U.S. Senator, Connecticut Governor. Born the son of U.S. Congressman Simeon Baldwin, he graduated from Yale College in 1811, studied law at the Litchfield Law School, in 1812, was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced to practice in New Haven, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State Senate, (1837-38) and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1840-41). In 1844, he was elected as a Whig the 32nd Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1846. After his term, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jabez W. Huntington, serving (1847-51). His last political position was in 1861, as a member of the peace convention held in Washington, D.C., to devise means to prevent the impending Civil War. Connecticut Governor Simeon Eben Baldwin, was his son.
