U.S. Senator. He attended the College of the City of New York, graduated from the law department of New York University in 1882, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in New York City. He served as a justice of the New York District Court (1893-1900) and as a justice of the New York State Supreme Court (1900-11). In 1911, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1917. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was president of the New York County Lawyers' Association and a trustee of New York University (1920-27). In 1934, he was appointed the official referee of the New York Supreme Court and served until death from being struck by a taxicab.
