R. E. GUILBEAU RITES HELD

Prominent Branch Man Dies Saturday After Extended Illness

Funeral services for Robert Eaton "Bob" Guilbeau, 56, postmaster at Branch for the past 28? years, and a prominent business and civic leader of the parish, who was found shot to death at his home in Branch at 4 p.m. Saturday, were held Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. from St. Joseph's Church in Rayne, with Very Rev. Msgr. Hubert Lerschen officiating, and throngs of friends gathering to pay last tribute to the memory of this well-know man.

A verdict of "accidental death" was returned by Dr. Z. J. Franques [Francez], Parish coroner in the fatal shooting.

Interment followed in the adjacent Catholic cemetery, with the Goissen Funeral Home assisted by the Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home of Crowley, in charge of arrangements. Until the hour of services, the remains were held in state at the Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne.

Pallbearers included; Rene Junca, Harold Junca, Sebastian Patout, Howard Guilbeau and Percy Jeffers.

Mr. Guilbeau had been in ill health for about two years, and his condition had steadily grown worse, although he was still able to be up. He had been in Rayne Saturday morning where he attended to business at a local bank, and also visited with several friends. During the afternoon hours, he went home for his customary rest, and returned to the post office and Guilbeau store which adjoined his home for a brief stay with his wife and others in the store. He returned home and a short time later Mrs. Guilbeau went to see how he was feeling, and found him dead, sitting in a chair on the side porch.

Native of Grand Coteau, Mr. Guilbeau was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Guilbeau. He came to Branch in 1917 as manager of the old Branch Mercantile Store, but in 1918, was made postmaster, a position which he had consecutively held since, and also opened his own establishment, operating the store and post office.

He was married to the former Miss Corinna Junca of St. Martin Parish, and they made their home in Branch, rearing, two fine boys.

Mr. Guilbeau was widely known and recognized throughout the state and parish as one of Acadia's leading citizens and workers. He had served the Branch community faithfully for many years, and was well-known and loved by all. He was a charter member of the Rayne Lions Club, and had only retired from active work with the organization when his health prohibited any such activities.

He is survived by his widow, nee Corinne Junca, and two sons: Dr. H. F. Guilbeau, Jennings, and Lee Guilbeau, Atlanta, Ga., as well as one grandson, Fran Guilbeau of Jennings. In addition, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. Z. Dugas, and three brothers, Lucius B. Guilbeau and Leo Guilbeau of Sunset, and Arthur Guilbeau of near Alvin, Texas.

"Bob" as everyone knew Mr. Guilbeau, was on of the most genial and interesting friends Tribune has ever had. His daily visits to Rayne and in Church Point where he was well-liked by such a large group of friends, were always anticipated by everyone, and only Saturday morning he had attended to business and visited briefly with a score of friends. Tribune Add this personal note of sympathy and condolence to the many sincere expressions being voiced to Mrs. Guilbeau and her two sons in this sad hour.
