Isaiah H. Sleeper was the son of Jacob Sleeper, born in 1808 in NY, died in 1845 in Tippecanoe Co., IN. His mother was Sarah Welch, born in 1804 in NC, died in 1839 in Tippecanoe Co., IN.
After his parents passed away he lived with his Uncle Buddell Sleeper.
"In the pre-civil war days, Buddell was the leader in the enterprise known as the Underground Railroad. Many fleeing slaves from the South were secreted in his home and taken on to the North in the dark hours of night, to freedom. This night work was often the duty of Isaiah Sleeper (his nephew) who made his home at Buddell Sleeper's."
