Obituary (Colfax Gazette- Aug 19,1910): Another Pioneer Gone, Mrs. Sarah E. Tompkins a pioneer of Whitman county, passed away at her home in Pullman on Friday evening, after having suffered ill health for several years. Mrs. Tompkins was born in Davis county, Iowa, November 27th, 1847, and crossed the plains with her parents in 1863, locating in Albany, Oregon, where, on February 25, 1872, she was married to John J. Tompkins. After a residence of three years in Idaho city, Idaho. She and her husband took a homestead 12 miles south of Colfax, where they lived until the death of Mr. Tompkins in 1899. Since that time she has lived in Colfax and Pullman. Four daughters, Mrs. P. R. Maurer, Miss Ada Tompkins, Mrs. T. M. Howard and Miss Pluma Tompkins, survive; also three brothers and one sister, B.B. Teters, J. Teters, M.S. Teters and Mrs. J. Gannon. Interment took place at Onecho cemetery Tuesday.
