Joe S. Baker, son of Calvin H. Baker and Sarah Frances Brantley, was born (illegitimate) on 6 May 1865 in Nash County, North Carolina; he died 9 Jul 1935 in Coopers Township, Nash County; under the name Josiah Brantley, he and Medora (Dora, Duck) Crumpler were married by G.B. Bryant, Justice of the Peace, 16 May 1886 at J.D. Baker's house, with witnesses Bennett Lindsey, Lucien Winstead and R.B. Vick.

DNA testing has proven that Joe S. Baker was a Baker descendant.

Dora "Duck" was the daughter of Bennett Crumpler and Rhoda Hawks, born 15 Aug 1868 in Nash County; she died 9 Sep 1946 in Coopers Township; by 1910 she had given birth to eight children, seven living.

Letter from Duncan Baker, Jr., Nash County, 24 Feb 1982: "The Calvin Baker homeplace still stands and Sam Baker's widow is still living there. In a field nearby is the Calvin H. Baker Cemetery. Your great granddaddy (Joe S. Baker) is not buried there but is buried about 2 miles down the road where his farm was located. He and his wife and a woman named Daisy are the only three. The graveyard is now near I-95. On your great granddad's grave is Joe S. Baker. They called him Joe for short. His wife was Madorra Crumpler."
