William was the son of Jonas Rauch and Eleanor Shaw. He served in the Civil War from Sept. 1864 to June 1865 in the Union Army under Capt. L. B. Richardson and Lieut. Cameron. He was in Co. I Batt. 43 Regt. 1st PA Light Art. William went to the front and although he was not wounded, the privations and exposure he was subjected brought on an attack of yellow jaundice. He was hospitalized eight weeks. After his discharge from the Army, he attended Bucknell Academy. William taught school for awhile. He later joined his father, Jonas, and brother, Peter H, in a roller and chop mill business and a farm at Kelly Cross Roads.
William was married to Rebecca Hafer. They had the following children: Anna Belle and Gilbert William Rauch.
