Amelia Patterson Frost Most Noted Women of Her Day
Editor Chronicle: I am writing in part the biography of one of the most noted and best beloved women of the early days in Cumberland county and adjoining counties.
She was a mid-wife by profession, and her name was Amelia Patterson Frost. She was the wife of Elijah Frost. She was married when only fifteen years old. She was the mother of twenty-four children. Seventeen of whom lived to be grown. Fourteen boys and three girls, Elizabeth, Mary and Rhoda. Rhoda was the mother of Mrs. Susie Dunbar. All of the boys were fiddlers, but two. Some of the boys had peculiar names: White Frost, Snow Frost, Winter Frost, Severe Frost, and Young Frost.
I expect, Grandma Frost helped to bring more children into the world than any woman in Tennessee. She would go 25 and 30 miles when called. She was a splendid rider and horsewoman.
There were no roads in those days, merely trails. She had to go on horseback. She road a side-saddle, with two horses, Old Jim, her saddle horse, a sorrel, with blaze face and white stockings, was some saddle horse; went all the gaits, and had almost human intelligence.
Creeks never got too full for Grandma Frost to cross. Jim swam like a duck. Grandma would put her feet between the saddle horn and Jim would take her across dry. Jim lived to be 31 years old.
Grandma Frost was with the writers mother when he was born, 1849, and with the writer's wife in 1872 when his first child was born. Grandma Frost died in 1878, I think. She has numerous relatives in Cumberland county. There are lots of the old-timers who remember her.
