Oliver Kennedy 75 years of age of Oakwood, VA passed away Tuesday May 22, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital. Born February 24, 1932 in Yukon WV, he was the son of the late Isaiah Kennedy and Flora Bell Vance Kennedy. He was retired from Island Creek Coal Corporation VP#2, he was of the Pentecostal Faith. A member of the UMWA, avid outdoors man, enjoyed hunting, but most of all he enjoyed working and staying busy. Loving husband and father.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Hodges. Three brothers, Fred, Clarence and Roger Kennedy. Father and mother-in-law Ethel and Floyd Vandyke. A Special Nephew Bobby Vandyke.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Gertrude Vandyke Kennedy of Oakwood, VA. One son Benny Ray Kennedy of Oakwood, VA. Three sisters, Carol Edwards and husband Dennis of Rogersville, TN, Etta Reynolds of Princeton, WV, Joann Ward and husband Milton of Belfast, VA. Four brothers, Carl Kennedy and wife Carrie of New Hall WV, Elmer Kennedy and wife Loretta of North Carolina, Steve Kennedy and wife Ruby of Abingdon, VA, Charlie Kennedy and wife Sandy of Levington, TX.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services for Oliver Kennedy will be conducted Friday May 25, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ronnie Parks and Pastor Paul Vandyke officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA.
Pallbearers will be Dean Kennedy, Tommy Reynolds, Jerry Cook, Ray Sturgill, Jack Vandyke, and Clearney Keen.
Honorary pallbearers will be Milton Ward, Terry Ward, Tommy Vandyke, and Jimmy Miller.
Friends may call the funeral home on Thursday after 6:00 p.m. where evening service will be held at 7:00 p.m.
