Longtime Alamosa resident William Harrison "Bill" Allen, 97, passed away on December 17, 2010 in Alamosa.

William was born on June 10, 1913 to Will and Mary Allen in Corpus Christi, Texas. In his younger years, he honorably served his country in the United States Army in the Philippines.

He was a past President of the Adams State Boosters, very active in forming softball leagues around the valley, a member of the American Legion Post #113, coached numerous softball, basketball and baseball teams and was at one time a writer for the Valley Courier. William was also very active in his church and was called to Temple work for over 20 years.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially enjoyed his family and sports, his family will remember him as a writer, poet and author and as the Patriarch of the family. He will be truly missed.

He is survived by his children, George Verden (Nancy) Wyatt of Golden, Colorado, Verna Dell Sutherland of Manassa, Colorado, Shyrel Noreen (Max) Hamilton, of Mesa, Arizona, Billie Mae Ott of Monte Vista, Colorado, and William Harrison Allen III of Castle Rock, Colorado, along with his companion of many years Edith Woodward, also surviving him are 23 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, along with his brother Malcolm Lyonal Allen.

William was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Laura Mae Linville, his son Jackie Carroll Wyatt, grandsons Jeff Sutherland, Mark Wyatt, William Travis Allen, his son-in-law Denny Ott, daughter-in-law Janet K. Sobey Allen, his brother Darrel Vandiver and his sister Juanita Monty Ridgway.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alamosa. Following services burial will be held at the Alamosa Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the Melanoma Research Foundation in care of the funeral home office or you may visit their website at www.melanoma.org.
