Hortense Virginia Richards was born on April 15, 1912 in Kirbyville, Jasper Co, TX. She was the only child of James Henry Richards and Ettie Mable Akins Richards. During her childhood she also lived in Orange, Orange Co, TX and Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches Co, TX. Hortense completed the seventh grade. After her 18th birthday, she moved to Houston, Harris, TX and became a waitress. Sometime after 1940, she returned to Jasper County, Texas and became a teacher in Jasper and Buna. She never married.
Miss Richards, 87, of Buna, Jasper Co, TX passed away on August 23, 1999 at Timberlake Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jasper, Jasper Co, TX. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 24, at Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Her parents and grandmother, Martha Marcellus "Mattie" White Akins, are also interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
