Biography Florence Sivola Fowler

Florence Sivola Fowler, the daughter of Seldon Godfrey Fowler and Harriet Mintoria Bagwell, was born February 7, 1902, in Summit, Blount County, Alabama. She was the youngest of five children with brother James Godfrey Fowler, 10 years old, sister Martha Evelyn "Dollie" Fowler, 9 years old, brother Elmer Elzie Fowler, 7 years old, and sister Attie Lois Fowler, 5 years old.

The family lived on a farm in the Summit Community, 8 miles south of Arab, in the northern corner of Blount County. Many of Seldon Fowler's family members; parents, aunts, and uncles along with brothers and sisters lived in that area of Blount County.

Sivola's father Seldon died October 4, 1902, at age 33. Seldon Fowler's death left his widow Harriet Mintoria Bagwell with 5 young children Jim, "Dollie," "Elm," "Attie," and 8-month-old baby Sivola. Harriet Mintoria Bagwell Fowler was unable to raise her 5 children alone. Their farm was too much for Harriet to manage alone and there were "too many mouths to feed and not enough to go around." The older children were sent to live with various grandparents, aunts and uncles to be raised and sent to school.

Sivola remained with her mother until about age 5 or 6 when she was also sent to live with another family member. Sivola told stories of her childhood, one of how she was working in the fields with her mother when her mother told her that they were looking at "long hard times ahead so come Sunday we will get your things together and we are going to see your aunt and uncle so you can live with them and go to school this fall."

In 1909, seven years after Seldon Fowler's death, Sivola's mother Harriet married John Moody "Mood" Dooley. He was 32 and she was 35 years old. It was the second marriage for both of them. He had 2 daughters from his first marriage, age 9 and 7 years old. They lived with "Mood" and Harriet in Boaz, Alabama.

Harriet's 5 children from her first marriage now ranging in age from Sivola at age 7 to James at age 17 continued to live with their relatives. Times were difficult during that period beginning with the Financial Panic and Depression of 1907.

About 1912 when Sivola was 14 years old she moved to a farm near Snead in Blount County to live with and care for her aging grandparents. Her grandfather, James Alexander Fowler, Sr, age 68, was a blind Civil War Veteran. Her grandmother, Martha Jane Walker Fowler, age 67, was no longer able to care for the two of them living alone. Sivola lived with them and cared for them until 1919.

Florence Sivola Fowler married Richard Arthur Reed on April 10, 1918, in the Friendship Community of Marshall County, Alabama. He was 20 and she was two months past 17 years old. They lived with her grandparents on the farm near Snead in Blount County, Alabama.

Arthur Reed, the son of Richard Thackerson Reed and Florence Ellen McCormick Reed was born August 3, 1897, on a farm near Alexander City in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He had 3 older sisters Rosa L "Rosie," Jettie C and Minnie Lee Reed. He lived with his family on a farm a quarter of a mile from Mount Hebron Missionary Baptist Church near Boaz in Marshall County, Alabama.

Seven months after they were married, on September 19, 1918, Arthur Reed was drafted into the US Army in support of World War I. He reported for service not knowing how long the war would continue or if he would survive and return. Five months after leaving his newlywed bride for the war he became a father with the birth of his first daughter Mildred Reed in Blount County on February 27, 1919. World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. By the fall of 1919, after 1 year of military service, Arthur was discharged and had returned to his bride and child. The family moved to a small farm about 2 miles south of his parents' farm where Arthur had grown up as an 8-year-old boy.

By about 1925 Arthur's parents, ages 69 and 65, were too old to work, manage and maintain their huge farm. They sold it to Arthur and Sivola to raise their growing family. Arthur and Sivola had 5 children: Mildred, Onzelle, Milton, Welton and Charlotte Reed. Mildred was born in Blount County. Onzelle, Milton and Welton were born in Boaz, Marshall County, Alabama. Charlotte was born in Albertville, Marshall County, Alabama 8 years after Welton was born. Sivola was almost 41 years old when Charlotte was born, and it was a difficult birth for her. Each of the Reed children grew up on the family farm, later married and started families of their own.

Arthur and Sivola lived their remaining lives on the farm west of Boaz in Marshall County, Alabama. The farm was located about a quarter of a mile east of Mt Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, 4147 Mt Hebron Rd, Douglas, Marshall County Alabama. Richard Arthur Reed died at age 75 on December 21, 1972, and is buried in Forrest Home Methodist Church Cemetery west of Boaz in Marshall County. Florence Sivola Fowler Reed died at age 91 on 14 Apr 1993, and is buried next to her husband.
