OBIT:Sheridan Enterprise/24 Oct 1912:
"Mr John Townsend, who was in his 80th year, died at his home on Herald & Emerson Streets, on Monday. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church at 11am. Wednesday. Rev Bash of the Christian Church had charge of the service in the absence of Rev. Kendall. Rev. Gillespile assisted in the service.

Mr Townsend was born in Terre Haute, IN on Apr 4, 1833. In early life he came to IA where he was married to Miss Mary Davis in 1857. A cosy home life was broken into when the young husband and father answered the call for volunteers and served in the 29th Iowa to the close of the war. His family grew to 10 children-8 of whom are now living. They are: Mrs. Stringer of Pacific Junction, IA, Mrs Crawford of Lincoln, KS, Mrs Wixon of Canada, Mrs Mary Addleman of Eugene OR, and Mrs Krout and Mrs Leach, both of Sheridan, WY. 2 sons, George Townsend and W.L. Townsend preceeded their father in death. Mrs Mary Townsend died in Sheridan in 1908.

About 18 months ago, Mr Townsend married again to a Mrs Linnt, who survives him. He united with the Methodist Church in youth and was a true friend and loyal citizen. One more of the valiant Grand Army of the Republic has taken his place in the shining ranks of the Army of God."
