Enlisted, June 27, 1916, in Troop D, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Mustered in for service on the Mexican border with Troop D, Squadron A Cavalry June 30, 1916. Squadron A was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, with the 6th NY Division ( later the 27th Division ). Squadron A returned to New York City, December 23, 1916, and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.

World War 1, attended, OTC, at Plattsburg Barracks, NY. and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Quartermaster Corp, August 15, 1917. Assigned to Camp Upton then transferred to the Motor Supply Train, 5th Division, June 6, 1918. He shipped out for France with his unit June 29, 1917. He saw combat in France till November 11, 1918, then was part of the Army of Occupation till July 10, 1919. Returning to the States he was discharged from the service, August 11, 1919.

He served in Squadron A Cavalry with his brother, Edward Denison Babcock, on the Mexican border.
