Ed was the first born child of Carl Oscar and Ethel Elizabeth McNaughton Peterson. His younger siblings were Alma, Russell, and Harold. His father was a grocer and later became a dairy farmer near 52nd and State Avenue in KCK. Ed grew up delivering milk and established a successful milk route.

Ed met and married the loves of his life, Inez Lillian Akers Hibler and her daughter, Patricia Inez Hibler on New Years Eve, 1938. Together they successfully built, owned, and operated West Haven Motel and Restaurant until their retirement in 1973. It was a family operation that included their daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Cecil Graves, and their nephew and his wife, Jay and June M. Bollinger. Ed and Inez were very active members in a variety of organizations including the Motel Association, Shriners, and Sertoma Club.

In 1956, Patricia and Cecil blessed Ed and Inez with their first and only grandson, Terryl Pat, who was the light of their life for eight short years. Sadly, Patricia, Cecil, and Terryl Pat were killed in a tragic car accident in 1964 that changed their lives forever. To honor the memory of their loved ones, they turned their lives over to the Lord and became active members of Grace Lutheran Church of KCK for the rest of their lives.
