Thomas was one of 11 children born to James & Evaline (Oakes) Oakes. His parents were first cousins. Their fathers, Elliot & Lemuel Oakes, were brothers and the sons of William H. Oakes & Elizabeth (Elliot).

Thomas married Althana M. (Harris) on December 17, 1855, in Guilford Co, NC. They had two children: oldest son's name unknown; second son, James Harmon Oakes.

Althana died young, soon after her eldest son had died. James Harmon, her only surviving child, was raised by his grandparents and other relatives.
He was later elected Commissioner of Revenue in Pittsylvania Co, VA.
James named his youngest daughter Althana Harris Oakes.

Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 4, 1861, with his younger brother, John Kerr Oakes. Thomas held the rank of 3rd Sergeant in Co B, 38th VA Infantry, PA Vindicators. He was wounded in Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died one month later in a Union hospital.
