Henry Maves immigrated to the United States in 1854, and settled in Illinois. In 1858 he married Mary Jane Evans in Richland Co, IL, and they had eight children: Sarah (1861), Henry (1863), Bettie (1866), Charles (1867), Rolla (1874), Nettie (1877), William (1878), and John (1880). In 1880 Henry and Mary Jane and their family moved to Vincennes, IN, where Henry worked as a laborer for many years. Henry's wife Mary Jane died in 1886, and Henry then lived with one or more of his sons. Henry moved to Denver sometime after 1910, and lived at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, John and Sarah Maves Kuster, until his death in 1914.
According to the obituary in the Vincennes Commercial, dated 5 May 1914: MAVIS: Word was received in this city Monday of the death of Henry Mavis Sr., a former resident of this city, who passed away Sunday at the home of his son-in-law, John Kuster, in Denver, Colo. The remains will be brought to this city today will be taken to the home of his son Henry Mavis, Jr., 235 Brouillette Street. The arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been announced.
