Mrs. Hale was born in Union on June 14, 1947, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Polly Patterson Holmes, Sr.
She was a graduate of Laurens High School, received her Bachelor's degree from Erskine College and her Master's degree from Clemson University. She retired as a school guidance counselor. Mrs. Hale was a member and choir director of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the Sandlapper Singers.
She is survived by her husband, James A. Hale, Sr.; step-children and their spouses, Lyn and Bobby Grubbs, Elise and Mike Hoffman, and James A., Jr. and Vickie Hale; sister, Margaret Ann (Dennis) West; brother, Henry C. (JoeAnne) Holmes, Jr.; grandchildren, Robert J. Grubbs, Michael A. Grubbs, Sara Beth Grubbs, Sam Hale, Matthew Hale, and Caroline Hoffman; nieces and nephews, Billy & Chris Clark, Ross and Marley Werner, Garrett and Kristen Holmes, C.J. West, Chris Tindal and Rebecca Holmes; and a great-niece, Anna Grace Clark.
Visitation will be from 6-8PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. Funeral services will be conducted at 4PM Thursday at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service at the church activity center.
Interment will be at 10:00 AM Friday in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC. The family suggests memorials be made to Sandlapper Singers; Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church Choir Fund; Erskine College; or to the Newberry Opera House Foundation.
