Mr. Colgrove came to MN in 1866. Taught school and farmed. Held office of county superviser for eleven years. Was town clerk a number of terms, and was justice of the peace. Was President of Board of Education.
He was secretary of the Granite City Iron Works, where he patented and manufactured the Colgrove potato digger.
James and Mary have one son, Pitt Payson Colgrove. He married Alice Jacobs. Their daughter, Helen, married Theodore Deker.
One daughter, Mary Louise Colgrove married Wm. W. Robertson.
One daughter, Frances Amanda, married Harry Bigerstaff, and after he died she married Anthony Murphy.
James had two brothers, William and Theodore that lived in Becker Co. MN
It is said that James lost more then two million dollars in the 1929 crash.
