Roy Smith

HENRY - Roy D. Smith, 72, of 615 Gateway Drive, Henry, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at 6:13 a.m. at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry, where he was receiving rehabilitation therapy after an extensive illness and surgery.

Roy was born Dec. 5, 1938 in Sublette, Ill., to Arthur and Marie (Kuhl) Smith. He married Katherine "Kitty" Harris on Aug. 7, 1960, at McNabb, Ill. She survives in Henry.

Also surviving are three sons, Gilbert (Rebecca) Smith and Curtus (Cheri) Smith, both of Henry, and Andreas Heidrich of Kassel, Germany; three daughters, Natalie (Crist) Berger, Sandra (Eric) Shearer and Angela (Dorge) Huang, all of Henry; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Martin Smith, and three sisters, Louise (Wally) Cordes, Dorothy Donaldson and Marlene (George) Deffenbaugh, all of Henry; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Smith Pearson of Henry and Annette Smith of Granville.

Roy was preceded in death by one son, Phillip "Rocky" Smith; four brothers, Elmer, Arthur, Lee and Clarence Smith; and three sisters, Lulu Smith, Anna Johnson and Besse Johnson.

Roy had served his country in the United States Army from 1956-1959, stationed in Germany.

He was a member of the Henry Baptist Church. Roy served as a deacon and taught the adult Sunday School class.

He was employed first by Caterpillar and then took a job in Henry at BF Goodrich Chemical, working as a chemical operator until he retired in 1993. He also did maintenance work for The Henry Fertilizer Plant and later as a security guard at the Dynergy Power plant in Hennepin. Roy last worked as a Building Commissioner for City of Henry for the past eight years.

He and his sons operated Illinois Valley Pest Control for 10 years, and he greatly enjoyed all the people he met while operating Kitty's Electric Beach in Henry.

He also was active with the Henry Ambulance.

Roy was an avid fisherman, teaching his grandchildren how to fish, and he loved to hunt mushrooms.

Roy was a great storyteller, he enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood and the past with the members of his family.

Roy had fought illness many years with grace and dignity.

Roy and his wife were always willing to open their home and hearts to many young people in the community that needed a place to call home.

Among those blessed to have been a part of Roy's extended family were Daniel Faetini, Michelle Leitz and Jimmie Grant. Roy considered it an honor to claim these people not only as dear friends, but as cherished family. These members include, the children and grandchildren of Russell and Evon Cheney, Melissa Shearer and children, the families of Richard and Dorie Gimbal and James and Cathy Pilkenton.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Henry United Methodist Church, 225 Lincoln St. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church, with an hour prior visitation. The Pastor Joshua Wasson will officiate. Burial will follow at Henry Cemetery in Henry. The Henry American Legion will accord full military rites.

Memorials may be made to the Henry Baptist Church or to the Henry Ambulance Service.
