U.S. Senator. He graduated from Willamette University, in 1876, received a medical degree from the same university in 1878, and then took postgraduate work in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City. He commenced the practice of medicine in San Francisco, California, returned to Oregon in 1887, he practiced medicine and was superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum, (1887-91), He also was Mayor of Portland, Oregon, (1905-09). In 1912, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, and served until his death from Bright’s decease.
