"Jacob Schmitt, Sr. and his wife Rosana were the earliest settlers in the region of Bedford County that would later become Freedom Township in Blair County, Pennsylvania. They homesteaded at the foot of Blue Knob mountain in 1774, and until 1785, their closest neighbors were located in Frankstown, Johnstown and Bedford. The Schmitt homestead included, in addition to the log house and barn, a cider press and blacksmith shop. Jacob served in the Bedford County Militia during the American Revolutionary War."
