Charles Kirk Munroe was born in a log cabin in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; the son of Charles and Susan Hall Munroe.

His wife was Mary Barr Munroe, married September 15, 1883, and they lived in Coconut Grove, Florida in 1886. Mary was also an accomplished writer.

He was the first editor of Harper's Young People magazine. He dropped "Charles" from his name in 1883. Kirk was an accomplished author of many published works such as Wakulla and The Painted Desert. He stopped writing in 1905 to develop real estate in Miami-Dade County.
