Penelope Sue Johnson 1945-2010

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Penelope "Penny" Sue Johnson of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Hospice of the Valley Eckstein Center in Scottsdale after a courageous battle against Parkinson's Disease, surrounded by her friends and family, including her two beloved sons, Jay and Josh. She was 65 years of age.

Penny leaves her two sons, Jay Rebholz of Scottsdale and Josh Rebholz of Laramie, Wyo.; two grandchildren, Kaden and Kallie Rebholz of Scottsdale; brother, R.C. Johnson of Memphis, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Betty Johnson of Springfield, Mo.; aunt and uncle, Roger and Donna Romine of Waterloo, Iowa; and an extended family and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her mother, Violet (Romine) Johnson; father, Robert Johnson; and sister, Jane Ann Johnson.

An amazing mother and friend to many, some for more than 60 years, Penny was extremely intelligent, clever and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was very independent, successfully raising two sons on her own, had a wonderful laugh and lived a life with integrity, of hard work and with love.

Penny was reared in Ottawa, born July 16, 1945, to a wonderful mother and father of whom she was very proud. She attended the world-renowned University of Missouri Journalism School before moving to Chicago. Penny lived an adventurous life, making many friends along the way. Many of those she met along her 65-year journey continue to claim her as a true friend to this day.

Penny devoted herself to raising her two sons, eventually settling in Scottsdale. Her career achievements included owning her own publishing company, many years as the editor for Arizona Trends Magazine, writer, designer, and she served as a development coordinator for Phoenix's Valley Youth Theatre. Penny was very engaged with her son's lives, volunteering for PTA, leading their school athletic booster organizations and attending each and every athletic event her sons participated in. She was everything a child could ask for in a parent.

Penny was infatuated by the ocean and beach, particularly San Diego, and dreamt many a long, hot summer Arizona day that she would eventually be able to spend her remaining time overlooking the Pacific. She was a long-suffering Chicago Cubs and Phoenix Suns fan as well a devoted fan of "The King," Elvis.

Penny will be remembered as a wonderful friend and a dedicated mother; she will be sorely missed by many.

A celebration of her life is planned for June 3, 2011, at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery in Ottawa, as well as a private celebration at Mission Beach in San Diego during the summer of 2011.

Memorial donations may be made in Penny's name to Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, 9494 E. Becker Lane, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.
