Prior to marrying Frank Pierce Drew in 1900, Mary Cedenia Morse was married to William Thomas "Tom" Benton from April 9, 1893 until his death more than likely sometime in 1894. In May 1894 he suffered serious injuries in an accident but nothing else can be found after that. William and Mary did have a daughter, Arminda "Minnie" Melissa Benton prior to his death.

Mesa was saddened by the sudden death of the wife of Mr. F. P. Drew. Mrs. Drew had been seriously ill the past few days and it was hoped and believed by all that she had recovered from an atrack of fever that had been preying upon her. Mrs. Drew was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Morse of Mesa, and had only been married about a year. The funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock today at the residence of Mrs. Charley Mullen, under the auspices of the Daughters of Rebekah, she being noble grand of the Mesa Lodge at the time of her death.
