He was Duke of Holstein-Gottorp in northern Germany, Oldenburg Dynasty, the son of Duke Frederick IV of Holstein-Gottorp and his wife Duchess Hedwig Sophia, elder daughter of King Carl XI of Sweden. He became reigning duke in infancy, upon his father's death in 1702, and all his life was a legitimate claimant to the throne of Sweden, as pro forma heir to King Carl XII. As such he was officially created a Prince of Sweden and a Royal Highness by the Swedish government, but he was bypassed when his aunt seated herself on the throne as sovereign and began her short reign as Queen Ulrica Eleanor of Sweden.
