SALISBURY — Donald Francis Aitken, 94, of 51 Cobble Road, died unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon at the Sharon Hospital in Sharon. He was the husband of the late Sally (Tiedeman) Aitken. Mr. and Mrs. Aitken were married on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1936. Mr. Aitken was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., son of the late Thomas Clifford and Elizabeth Virginia (Dolan) Aitken.
The youngest of nine children, Don was employed as the personnel manager for the Becton-Dickinson Company in North Canaan. He retired from there in 1981 with 45 years of service. Donald was involved with the Salisbury Winter Sports Association. His main focus throughout his life was his family and his work. He spent 100 percent of his life devoted to his family.
Don is remembered as a faithful husband, a wonderful father of three sons, a proud grandfather of five grandsons, and ever so proud of his three great-grandsons.
Don's survivors include his three sons, Donald Frank Aitken and his wife, JoAnn, Douglas Clifford Aitken and his wife, Venette, and Scott John Aitken and his wife, Teri; five grandsons, Donald Scott Aitken, the late Andrew Thomas Aitken, who passed when he was 27 due to a battle with cancer, William Douglas Aitken and his wife, Amanda, Christopher Scott Aitken and Joseph Lee Aitken; three great-grandsons, John Douglas Aitken, Donald Andrew Aitken and Jack Thomas Aitken; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Canaan United Methodist Church, Church Street, North Canaan 06018. There are no calling hours.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 582, Salisbury 06068. Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home, 118 Main St., North Canaan 06018.
