He was killed in France December 24, 1944. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Moore Thurmond, 619 Clermont.
Thurmond was graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Southern Methodist University. He was a member of the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce and the First Presbyterian Church. He was a field representative for the Floyd West Insurance Company when he entered military service.
As a member of the 3d Infantry Division, Thurmond served in Italy and France. The Purple Heart was awarded him posthumously.
Other survivors are a son, John E. Thurmond, Jr. of Spokane, Washington; a daughter, Mary Vee Thurmond of Spokane, Washington; two brothers, Wade Thurmond and Jack Thurmond, both of Dallas; a grandmother, Mrs. H. W. Thurmond of Dallas; and a grandfather C. M. Jones of Friona.
Pallbearers will be Slayton McGhee, Joe Pickard, Bill Flemister, Bill Hamilton, Robert Morris, and Quilmon Davis.
