Ali "Eli" Ward was reportedly born on March 19, 1856 in Johnson County, Kentucky. There are discrepancies regarding his date and place of birth. He was the son of Solomon Ward and Mahala Jane Porter. He was the paternal grandson of William Benton Ward and Elizabeth Meek and maternal grandson of Rev. Benjamin Patrick (or Franklin?) Porter and Elizabeth Abigail Blevins.

He was the brother of Benjamin J. Ward, Malissa Ward Banfield, Stonewall Jackson Ward, Solomon Truman Ward, Clementine Ward Hannah, Harmon Harris Ward, William T. Ward and John M. Ward.

Eli was married to Elizabeth Setser on August 21, 1879 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He was the father of Elijah Ward, Malcolm Ward, America Ward Collins, Zellie Ward Burchett, Maggie Ward Goble, John Ward and David Ward.

Eli married his second wife Arminta Burchett on July 28, 1920 in Floyd County, Kentucky.

Eli passed away at the age of eighty-five from senility (old age) on April 5, 1941 in Edgar, Floyd County, Kentucky.
