Olivia Ward, who was truly an angel on earth, earned her wings Saturday evening, December 11, 2010, when she passed peacefully into a better life as her mom and dad held her close.

Born July 24, 1997 in Akron, Ohio, Olivia enjoyed a carefree childhood until she was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was five years old. Over the next eight years her courage, smiles and infectious giggle melted the hearts of all whose lives she touched.

Olivia always put others and their needs before her own.

Olivia had the hands of an artist and the heart of a warrior, and as her time grew short, in an act of selflessness, she created some special artwork pieces which she worked on with her mom, Laura and then donated last month to raise money for the Ed Bear Project, a foundation that benefits children in need at Akron Children's Hospital.

Cleveland Ride for Kids, which helps to raise money for brain tumor research, was another charity Olivia was passionate about. Olivia and her dad, Bill, helped raise money for the event and then enjoyed riding dad's motorcycle together at the event.

Members of the Akron Zips softball team loved and supported Olivia, and their coaches adopted her through The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The team included her in many special events and kept her in their heart and prayers.

Olivia was an avid collector of stuffed bears, but the most special of those was Molasses, a bear given to her by a stranger at the hospital when she was in the midst of her first round of radiation therapy. Molasses was a constant presence in Olivia's life from that moment, in good times and bad, and her dad said the stranger had no idea what that gift meant to all of them.

Olivia is survived by her parents, Bill and Laura Ward, grandmother, Marilyn Ward, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by her friends, schoolmates, teachers, doctors, nurses and so many others touched by her in her short life, including her dog Precious Gem, who joined the family just this year. Olivia was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert Ward, Ronald Beadle and Marjorie Beavers.

Service will be held Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Cox Funeral Home, 1376 High Street, Wadsworth, Ohio (one mile north of I-76 on State Route 94), Pastor David Hill will officiate. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth, immediately following the service. Family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of Olivia's favorite charities.
