Maximillian Baldauf was born in a coal-patch town called Jimtown in Dawson, Fayette County. When he was about five years old, his family moved to Stowe Township in Allegheny County and he grew up in McKees Rocks.
He married Anna Smiar, also born in Fayette. They made their home on Thompson Avenue in McKees Rocks where Max worked at various jobs including boiler maker, core maker for Fort Pitt Malleable and electrician. He eventually became the caretaker at St Mary Help of Christian's parish.
