Arturo D. Roman, 81, a lifelong resident of Deming passed away Thursday November 25, 2010 at Mt. View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 from 4 to 7 at Baca's Funeral Chapel where a prayer vigil will begin at 7 o'clock that evening. Mass of the Resurrection will be Wednesday afternoon at 2 at St. Ann Catholic Church with Fr. Enrique Lopez Escalera, Pastor officiating. Concluding services with honors will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.
Arturo was born April 23, 1929 in Deming to Federico and Apolonia (Dominguez) Roman. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and after returning home he worked as an insurance salesman before entering law enforcement, which would become his lifelong career. He began as a dispatcher with the Luna County Sheriff's Department and later was employed with the City of Deming where he served the community for over 20 years, partly as a detective and later retiring in 1984 as Chief of Police for the City of Deming. After his retirement Arturo was a night auditor at the Holiday Inn until 1988. His interest in the community continued as he was a volunteer at the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum where he was particularly involved in the archives, he was a very active volunteer with the Salvation Army and was active with the Sr. Olympics having placed in several events. He loved his family and enjoyed writing, bowling and exploring genealogy.
He is survived by 2 sons, Arturo Roman Jr. and his wife Valerie of Chino, Hills, CA, John Roman and his wife Raquel of Odessa, TX, 2 daughters, Sara P. Hartman and her husband Richard of Deming, Susan Koertner and her husband Rod of Katy, TX; 1 sister, Aurora Sanchez of Deming; 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Arturo was preceded in death by his wife Alma J. Roman, his parents, 2 sons who died at birth and by his brother, Alfredo Roman.
