WW2 veteran serving as dental surgeon in ETO.

Charles W. Adams D.D.S. passed away at home Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, following a brief illness.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen D. Adams and is survived by his second wife, Florence A. Adams. He also was predeceased by his sister, Jean A. Robb.
Beloved father of Susan Adams (Thomas) White, and Charles W. (Teresa) Adams Jr. Loving grandfather of Thomas E. III, Charles and Katie White, Charles W. III and Elizabeth Adams, and great-grandfather to Thomas E. White IV. Uncle to Bruce P. Robb, Dr. Peter C. and Helen Jean Dodenhoff.
Dr. Adams was a 1934 graduate of Grosse Pointe High School. He graduated from the Northwestern University School of Dentistry in May 1943, and entered the U.S. Army that month. He spent 16 months during World War II as a dental surgeon in the European Theater, involved in the actions and campaigns of the U.S. Ninth Army, in its drive across Central Europe. Upon his return, he entered private dental practice, caring for his many patients’ needs for more than 50 years, retiring from active practice in 1997.
He had many interests and leisure pursuits, with boating and golf among his particular favorites. As a young man, he was a fixture at the Detroit Yacht Club and along the Detroit River in his favorite outboards and runabouts, and as a life member of the Bayview Yacht Club, he was an active sailor as well.
A fanatic golfer, over the years the appearance of “Doc” and his foursome in early spring on the Country Club of Detroit’s first tee, signaled the unofficial kickoff of each new golf season.
A memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at the Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack, Grosse Pointe Park. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home. Visitation begins at noon.
